In a turn that would have seemed unlikely just a few year ago, Sedona Prince, once a star player in college basketball, failed to be drafted by any team in the WNBA on Monday night.
Prince made a splash throughout her college career, both on and off the court. Her time at both the University of Texas and the University of Oregon were marred by injury. She wrapped up her time playing at the college level at Texas Christian University, where she helped her team reach its highest ranking. She also made a name for herself during those years by being active on TikTok and calling out gender inequality in the NCAA.
But that might be the end of Prince’s impact on the sport.
Despite previous projections by analysts that she would be picked in the first or second round of the WNBA draft, every single team skipped over her. Now, Prince’s only option is to play as a free agent, although it’s unclear how her future with the WNBA will shake out.
According to ESPN, the reasoning behind this surprise turn of events likely involves the allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault that have been brought against Prince by multiple women in recent years.
"Our reporting confirms though that this is something that teams were looking at along with her age and her injury history," reporter Ryan Ruocco noted on air.
One of the basketball player’s exes made a series of TikTok videos last year detailing their breakup while making allegations of physical and verbal abuse. At least three other women have also come forward, with one lawsuit filed (and withdrawn) and at least one police report filed.
Prince has denied all the accusations against her and has never been formally charged with any crime.
"She has been convicted on social media by people who have attempted to use their relationship with Sedona to attract followers and to build their influencer careers and settle grudges," Prince’s attorney, A. Boone Almanza, told ESPN over the weekend.’’
Whatever the truth may be, it appears as if the WNBA teams that once may have welcomed Prince with open arms now consider her too much of a liability. And fans of women’s basketball don’t seem to torn up about it.
