IHSAA basketball regional wrap: OT games, wild comeback wins, upsets and more
Winners of IndyStar athlete of week polls will be invited to and honored at the Indiana High School Sports Awards, presented by the Indiana Pacers/Fever, on April 27 at Butler's Clowes Hall.
This week’s nominees:
Nick Baker, Fishers: The 6-7 senior led the way with 18 points as top-ranked Fishers rolled to an 89-39 win over Harrison (West Lafayette) in a Class 4A regional at Frankfort.
Josiah Ball, Maconaquah: Ball had a monster game with 32 points and 11 rebounds as Maconaquah knocked off Marion 78-72 to win a Class 3A regional title. It is the Braves’ second regional championship in history and first since 1999.
Gavin Betten, Manchester: Betten, a senior, went for 20 points, 11 rebounds, six blocked shots and five assists as Manchester defeated Tipton 54-36 to win the Class 2A regional title. It is the first regional title for Manchester since 1995.
Dezmon Briscoe, Crispus Attucks: The senior went for 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots as Class 3A No. 6 Attucks defeated Northview 57-46 to win the program’s first regional championship since 2019.
Nick Curtin and Jake McGraw, Clinton Prairie: Curtin scored 16 of his team’s 24 points in the first half and finished with 28 points in Clinton Prairie’s 58-55 overtime win over Lafayette Central Catholic in a Class A regional at Frankfort. McGraw scored 17 points in the second half and overtime. His free throw forced overtime and two free throws with 3 seconds left in overtime helped to ice the game and put him at 2,000 career points.
Alex DeWitt, Orleans: The junior went for 28 points and 10 rebounds on 12-for-18 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line as Class A fourth-ranked Orleans knocked off Christian Academy 56-47 for its first regional title in 22 years.
P.J. Douglas, Jeffersonville: The Wright State-bound senior went for 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting and had three rebounds, two assists and two steals as No. 6 Jeffersonville rolled to a 65-40 victory over Evansville Harrison in a Class 4A regional.
Bronson Edwards, Delta: Edwards’ driving left-hand scoop shot in the final seconds allowed Delta to defeat seventh-ranked Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian 45-43 to win the Class 3A regional at Lapel. Edwards led Delta with 19 points.
Luke Ertel, Mt. Vernon: The junior point guard and Purdue commit was the maestro for Mt. Vernon in a 74-40 win over Brownsburg in the 4A regional at Southport. Ertel finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as Mt. Vernon won its first regional in 12 years.
Stryker Gill, Hauser: The junior point guard had a triple double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as Class A No. 2 Hauser defeated Lutheran 70-52 in the regional. It is the Jets’ first regional title since 2006.
Julius Gizzi, New Palestine: The senior went for 28 points and nine rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 13-for-17 from the free throw line in third-ranked New Palestine’s 63-49 win over No. 5 Guerin Catholic in a Class 3A regional.
Blake Gray, University: Gray helped University to a 44-43 win over Triton Central in a Class 2A regional with a 17-point game on 7-for-8 shooting, including 2-for-2 on 3-pointers, with four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
Terrence Hayes, Gary 21st Century: The junior guard went for 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and two steals as No. 6 Gary 21st Century defeated No. 7 Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 61-46 to win a Class 2A regional at North Judson.
Tyrese Jones, South Bend Riley: Jones went for 45 points on a blistering 18-for-21 shooting from the field as South Bend Riley defeated Warsaw 77-71 in double overtime to win a Class 4A regional at South Bend Washington.
Eli Sego, Triton Central: The junior kept hope alive for Triton Central in a 44-43 loss to University in the 2A regional at Lebanon. Sego scored 30 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the 3-point line (10-for-15 overall) and three rebounds.
