The longest trophy droughts among Premier League clubs as Newcastle end 56-year wait
Newcastle United ended the longest trophy drought among Premier League clubs after beating Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup on Sunday.
The Magpies last felt the sweet taste of glory in 1969 when they beat Hungarian side Újpest to claim the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The now-defunct competition was the precursor to the Uefa Cup (now the Europa League), but is not recognised by Uefa.
That’s why many point to the 1955 FA Cup as Newcastle‘s last ‘proper’ trophy. The Tyneside outfit have, of course, won the second tier title on four occasions since then, but 70 years is an excruciatingly long wait for major silverware for such a big club.
There are multiple Premier League clubs who remain starved of success after many decades, while a number of them have never won a major trophy in their entire history. We’ve listed the longest droughts among top-flight sides here – and Spurs did not make the top five!
The longest trophy droughts among Premier League clubs
5. Everton – 30 years
After spending the 1980’s among the cream of the crop, Everton have been in various stages of decline over the past three and a half decades. Their last trophy came in 1995 when they shocked Manchester United to win the FA Cup before going on to win the FA Charity Shield later that year.
The Toffees have been to one FA Cup final since then and don’t look like ending their wait anytime soon.

4. Nottingham Forest – 35 years
It’s been a long time since Nottingham Forest routinely won trophies, but the good times appear to be returning at the City Ground. The Tricky Trees are on course to qualify for the Uefa Champions League, a competition they won twice when it was still called the European Cup, and are still in the FA Cup, which they last won in 1959. After winning the League Cup in 1990, they haven’t won anything in the post-Brian Clough era (unless you count the play-offs).
3. Ipswich Town – 44 years
Yet another club whose heyday was in the eighties, Ipswich last picked up a trophy when they beat AZ Alkmaar in the Uefa Cup final in 1981. Sir Bobby Robson’s team also finished runners-up in the old First Division that season, which they repeated the following year. Since then they have only managed to win one play-off final and a pair of Ipswich Hospital Cups.

2. Wolves – 45 years
You have to go back a long time to find Wolves‘ last golden era. They finished the 1950’s with three consecutive top-flight titles and begun the next decade with successive FA Cup wins. Wanderers went on to win the League Cup in 1974 and 1980, but nothing since then. Three FA Cup semi-finals is the closest they have come to adding to their trophy cabinet.
1. Southampton – 49 years
The baton for longest trophy drought for a Premier League club has officially been handed to Southampton, who haven’t won major silverware since 1976. That year the Second Division side stunned Manchester United at Wembley to claim their first, and to this date only major trophy. Saints also won the women’s cup final that season, becoming the first club to win both competitions in the same year.
Southampton have lost one FA Cup and two League Cup finals since then, although they did claim the Football League Trophy in 2010.
