Cincinnati Reds spring training: Reds lose to Seattle Mariners, drop 6th straight
GOODYEAR, Arizona – The Cincinnati Reds (9-13-1) lost for the sixth consecutive Cactus League game Sunday, 8-3 to the Seattle Mariners at Goodyear Ballpark.
Brady Singer sewing up good spring
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Brady Singer, the No. 4 starter to open the season, retired 10 of 11 batters at one point during a 4 2/3-inning start, allowing one run on four hits.
Singer, who has one more start before making his Reds debut March 31 against the Texas Rangers, struck out five and walked one. He had faced just one over the minimum until Dominic Canzone led off the fifth with a home run, snapping a string of five straight retired.
Gavin Lux does it himself to produce a run
Cincinnati Reds third baseman Gavin Lux, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in an offseason trade, doubled the opposite way with one out in the second, then stole third and continued home after an errant throw caromed off M’s third baseman Donovan Solano’s glove.
Don’t be surprised if Lux opens the season in the lineup at first against Giants right-hander Logan Webb.
Terry Francona thinks again on starting Jose Trevino
One day after getting sent out for a CT scan on his throwing hand, catcher Jose Trevino was ready to play and in the original lineup Sunday – until manager Terry Francona decided to give him an extra day as a precaution.
Trevino took a foul tip off his bare hand in a game Friday and by Saturday said he could have played that day. The CT scan agreed, and he was ready to go after proving his good health in morning work Sunday.
“I just think if he got a foul tip or something, or he got jammed, I’d be kicking myself. So we’ll catch him (Monday),” Francona said, adding, “He’s a pretty tough kid.”
Up next for Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds face their Goodyear neighbors, the Cleveland Guardians, in a rare spring night game Monday at 9:05 p.m. (ET) at Goodyear Ballpark, on MLB Network TV and WLW-700 radio.
Reds LH Andrew Abbott makes his second start of the spring, first in an official Cactus League game, as he works his way toward an on-time start at the back end of the opening rotation following a slow start to the spring.
RH Tanner Bibee, who’s in the mix for a possible Opening Day start, goes for the Guardians.
