Chiefs commemorate contributions of departing veterans after first wave of free agency
Though the Kansas City Chiefs made several important signings in free agency last week, the team also had to part with several key players who had helped it get to Super Bowl LIX last season.
Few of Kansas City's defenders were more important to the Chiefs than veterans Justin Reid and Tershawn Wharton, who both signed contracts with new teams last week.
Reid ultimately elected to take a deal with the New Orleans Saints, while Wharton came to an agreement with the Carolina Panthers.
Kansas City's front office is sure to have hated to see Reid and Wharton walk, and the Chiefs paid tribute to their departures in posts to Twitter:
J Reid is a champ, indeed. Appreciate everything @JustinqReid! pic.twitter.com/jN2CKZ0vpA

While it is unclear how Kansas City will choose to replace Reid and Wharton, there are still plenty of impressive veterans remaining on the free agent market who could help the Chiefs' defense improve next season.
Stay tuned to see how general manager Brett Veach will choose to address Kansas City's various needs over the next few weeks.
