Chelsea linked with move for “next Isak” instead of paying huge fee for Newcastle striker
Fabrizio Romano this week gave us the green light we’ve all been waiting for – he confirmed that Chelsea are ready to spent “important money” on a number 9 to lead the team and give us the goalscoring edge we’ve lacked for so long.
Now you could say this is all pretty obvious – we’ve got one striker who is patchy at the best of times. And this season, now he’s injured, we’ve suffered greatly in terms of results.
But this need was equally obvious last summer and the summer before, and nothing was done about it. So you can forgive us for not taking anything for granted.
Now we know the plan is to spend big on a top option, the remaining question is who it will be.
Chelsea could try for Isak – or the next Isak
A dream name would be Alexander Isak, the Newcastle striker who has gone to the next level this season and proved himself one of the best players in his position in the Premier League.
But he may well be unobtainable – too expensive and in too much demand from teams who can offer more competitively and financially.
An interesting angle would be to try and get one step ahead of the Magpies. CaughtOffside today report that they’re talking to Bayer Leverkusen attacker Victor Boniface as a potential Isak replacement.
Chelsea’s transfer strategy in recent years is focused on trying to sign player before they blossom in the Premier League and see their value inflated. This could be a prime example – swooping for the man wanted to replace Isak rather than paying the vast fee needed to sign the man himself.
We’ve certainly tracked the Nigeria attacker for long enough – if our scouts think he’s good enough, this is the time to strike.
