The links connecting Chelsea with Jesus Rodriguez of Real Betis aren’t going anywhere it seems.

A name that was mentioned very vaguely earlier in the season is now coming back regularly, and the last few days have seen it come up with better and better sources putting their name to the claim that we’re interested in the speedster.

A major part of this seems to be Jadon Sancho’s continued disappointing form convincing fans that another option out wide could be brought in, with Chelsea apparently considering paying the £5m penalty to not turn Sancho’s loan into a permanent deal.

CaughtOffside’s report today affirms our desire to sign a left winger, with Mykhailo Mudryk facing a ban and Sancho perhaps not sticking around. And Rodriguez fits the bill, especially in price terms.

Their report says he could be bought for just €35m from the Seville based team, and given he’s still 19 and won’t have major wage demands, he very much fits the bill of what our sporting directors like to sign.

If you’re looking for more production than Sancho, perhaps Rodriguez isn’t yet your man – he’s got 2 goals and an assists in 23 games for Betis this season, an even worse return than the on loan Man U winger. But his electric pace is clearly convincing scouts that there’s a lot more to come.

In many ways his signing would be similar to the move we made for Nicolas Jackson – trying to snag a raw La Liga talent just before they explode and become unaffordable.

A lot will depend on Sancho’s future of course, but we increasingly think this looks like one to watch.
