Celtics star Jayson Tatum leaves game early after suffering a left ankle sprain in the third
Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum injured his left ankle Monday night on the road against the Sacramento Kings. He left the game early with what the team deemed a left ankle sprain and did not return.
The injury came mid-way through the third quarter, with the Celtics firmly in control. Tatum elevated to shoot a 3-pointer, and landed awkwardly on Kings forward Domantas Sabonis. Tatum immedieatly grabbed his ankle upon hitting the floor, and stayed down for several minutes. He was eventually helped to his feet and over to Boston's bench. Tatum entered the game a few moments later to take a pair of free throws, and then headed to the locker room for the rest of the game.
Tatum was up to 25 points on the evening to go with 7 rebounds and 8 assists. At the time of this writing, the severity of the injury is not known.
The former Duke Blue Devil will be eligible for awards at the end of the season because he has already appeared in 65 games this season. Even if Tatum's ankle sprain is not too serious, it is possible the team elects to sit the All-NBA forward out of an abundance of caution.
Boston is on the road Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns and then off until Saturday with a game against the San Antonio Spurs down in Texas. Tatum could rest an entire week and only miss two games.
