Cavaliers' win streak ends as Magic win 108-103
CLEVELAND (AP) —
Paolo Banchero scored 24 points, Franz Wagner added 22 and the Orlando Magic stunned Cleveland 108-103 on Sunday to end the Cavaliers’ winning streak at 16 games.
The Cavs lost for the first time since Feb. 4 as the Eastern Conference leaders were unable to put away the Magic in the final minutes. Cleveland missed five shots — three by All-Star Donovan Mitchell — in the final minute.
Banchero’s 16-foot jumper put the Magic ahead 104-103, and after a badly missed 3-pointer by Cleveland’s De’Andre Hunter, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made two free throws with 31 seconds left to give Orlando a three-point lead.
Max Strus missed a potential tying 3-pointer on Cleveland’s next possession and Orlando’s defense swarmed Mitchell, who misfired on a pair of 3s.
Banchero shot just 6 of 22 but added 11 rebounds and seven assists. Wendell Carter Jr. added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Orlando.
Mitchell returned after missing two games with a sore groin and finished with 23 points. Jarrett Allen added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavs, who were denied becoming the first team since Phoenix in 2021 to win 17 straight.
The NBA-leading Cavs played without All-Star forward Evan Mobley, who has been dealing with a bruised foot.
76ERS 130, MAVERICKS 125
DALLAS (AP) — Quentin Grimes scored 28 points in his first game against his former team and Philadelphia beat Dallas in a matchup of injury-depleted clubs.
Jalen Hood-Schifino added 19 points as the Sixers won for just the third time in 18 games.
P.J. Washington Jr. had 29 points and 12 rebounds for Dallas after missing the previous eight games with a sprained right ankle. Klay Thompson and Naji Marshall scored 21 apiece.
The defending Western Conference champion Mavericks dropped a season-worst three games under .500. Their lead for 10th, and the West’s final play-in spot, is one game over Phoenix, which played later at the Los Angeles Lakers.
The teams had 19 players between them listed as out on the injury report, headlined by Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis for Dallas and Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey for the Sixers.
Grimes joined Philadelphia in the “other” deal the Mavs made before the trade deadline. That was two days after Dallas infuriated its fan base by sending superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Davis in early February.
LAKERS 107, SUNS 96
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Luka Doncic had 33 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, and Los Angeles snapped their four-game losing streak with a victory over Phoenix.
Austin Reaves scored 28 points and Jaxson Hayes matched his season high with 19 for the Lakers, who returned from an 0-4 road trip to extend their home winning streak to seven games.
Kevin Durant scored 21 points and Devin Booker had 19 for the 11th-place Suns, who missed a chance to gain ground on Dallas for the West’s final play-in spot after the Mavericks lost at Philadelphia. Phoenix remained 1 1/2 games behind Dallas with a game in hand.
LeBron James (left groin strain) missed his fourth straight game, but coach JJ Redick said the top scorer in NBA history is “ramping up” toward a return.
Lakers starter Rui Hachimura (knee) also missed his ninth straight game, but Doncic (ankle) returned after sitting out Friday’s loss in Denver, as did Hayes, Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent.
NETS 122, HAWKS 114
NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Johnson scored 28 points, Keon Johnson added 22 and Brooklyn beat Atlanta.
Tyrese Martin had 16 points for the Nets, who snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 12 games. Jalen Wilson and Trendon Watford finished with 13 points apiece.
Trae Young had 28 points and 12 assists for the Hawks, who have dropped two in a row after winning four straight. Onyeka Okongwu added 21 points and 15 rebounds.
The Hawks led by 10 in the third quarter, but the Nets had it down to one by the end of the period and outscored Atlanta 31-22 in the fourth.
BLAZERS 105, RAPTORS 102
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Anfernee Simons scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, Toumani Camara finished with 21 and Portland rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat Toronto to snap a five-game skid.
Portland made 18 3-pointers, with Simons hitting six — four in the fourth quarter — and Camara tied his career high with five.
Deni Avdija finished with 19 points, including two free throws that capped the scoring with 5.1 seconds left, six rebounds and six assists. Shaedon Sharpe scored 17 for the Trail Blazers.
Jakob Poeltl and Ochai Agbaji scored 19 points apiece for the Raptors. Scottie Barnes finished with 16 points, six rebounds, six assists — including a pass from beyond halfcourt to Agbaji for an alley-oop layup — and six steals.
TIMBERWOLVES 128, JAZZ 102
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 41 points on Sunday as Minnesota won their eighth straight, beating Utah.
Jaden McDaniels had a double-double by halftime and finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Donte DiVincenzo had 11 points and seven assists for the Timberwolves, who are in a tight battle with Golden State for sixth place in the Western Conference.
Collin Sexton led Utah with 22 points, while Walker Kessler had 15 points and 19 rebounds. Laurie Markkanen added 16 points for the Jazz, who have lost nine in a row.
Edwards hit 16 of 27 shots and made five 3-pointers, topping 40 points in a game for the seventh time this season.
CLIPPERS 123, HORNETS 88
LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Harden had 31 points and 10 rebounds, Kawhi Leonard scored 23 points and Los Angeles beat Charlotte.
Ivica Zubac added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Clippers. He made two foul shots with 5:43 left before halftime to give the Clippers 45-34 lead and they led by double digits for the remainder of the game.
Derrick Jones added 12 points for the Clippers.
Mark Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and LaMelo Ball scored 16 for Charlotte.
