Cavaliers finish second at TJ Invitational

The Thomas Jefferson boys tennis team, fueled by a first-place finish in No. 2 doubles, captured second place in the six-team Thomas Jefferson Invitational on Friday with doubles matches at Thomas Jefferson and singles matches at Millennium Family Fitness.

Monett, which claimed titles in both No. 1 and No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, won the team title with 23.5 points. The Cavaliers followed with 17.5 points, and Carthage was third with 13 points. Clever tallied 11.5 points, Aurora had 4, and Mount Vernon finished with 2.5.

Thomas Jefferson's No. 2 doubles team of Ringo Snow and Phillip Mitchell defeated Monett's Emiliano Garcia and Evan Patterson 8-6 in their first pool play match and earned a spot in the championship match with an 8-6 win over Aurora's Landon Brown and Owen Gibson.

Snow and Mitchell won the title with a 9-8 (9-7) tiebreaker over Clever's Austin Ginter and Austin Paasch in the No. 2 doubles final.

Garcia and Patterson finished third after defeating Carthage's Steven Chavez-Merida and Kristoffer Cancinos 8-6. Brown and Gibson finished fifth with an 8-2 win over Mount Vernon's Wyatt Haskins and Tej Patel.

In the No. 1 doubles final, Monett's Braxton Jackson and Keegan Kutz defeated Clever's Triston Keithley and Jason Williams 8-2 to claim first place.

Thomas Jefferson's Ryker Faaborg and Nathan Cole earned third after beating Carthage's Esman Chanchavac and Ivan Barrios-Lopez 8-5, and Aurora's Tomasso Bolognesi and Aaron King finished fifth after an 8-1 win over Mount Vernon's David Henry and Anthony Creed.

In the championship match for No. 1 singles, Monett's Elijah Ridenour defeated Carthage's Braden Jones 8-3 for the title.

Ridenour reached the finals with an 8-1 win Mount Vernon's Caleb Cline and an 8-2 victory over Aurora's Mario Jimenez. Jones defeated Clever's Michael Garrison 8-1 and Thomas Jefferson's Jack Goodhue 8-2 to earn his spot in the finals.

Goodhue captured third with an 8-2 win over Jimenez. Cline finished fifth after beating Garrison in a 9-8 (7-1) tiebreaker.

Monett's Logan Kutz won the No. 2 singles championship with an 8-5 victory over Carthage's Kyler Bates. Thomas Jefferson's Yousuf Mokhtar earned third with an 8-1 win over Mount Vernon's Grady Thompson and Clever's Noah Thornton finished fifth after an 8-6 win over Aurora's Greyson Boettler.

The Cavaliers return to action Monday when they host Neosho at 4:30 p.m. Carthage will host Parkview on Monday.
