Apr. 7—ABERDEEN — Northern State University wrestler and Winner native Wyatt Turnquist capped his collegiate wrestling career in 2025 by being named to the all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference second team, earning all-conference honors for the fourth time in his career. He also surpassed 100 career wins in March as well.
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Turnquist went 19-3 during the regular season and 7-1 in the NSIC, with his lone league loss coming to first teamer Colby Njos, of St. Cloud State. He spent the entire season ranked by the NWCA, sitting as high as fourth at the end of February and placed fourth at the UIndy Midwest Classic before the holiday break. In addition, he was top-10 in the country in technical falls this season with nine.
Turnquist finished in fourth place at the NCAA Super Region V tournament on March 1, leaving him short in his pursuit for a national tournament bid. He did reach 100 career wins for the Wolves at the tournament, becoming the 12th NSU wrestler in program history to reach the career milestone, finishing with 101.
SIOUX FALLS — A pair of area standouts are leading the University of Sioux Falls in the outdoor track and field throwing events.
Scotland High School graduate Delaney VanDriel is among the USF women's leaders in the discus early in the spring season, had a career-best toss at the end of March of 149 feet, 3 inches. That mark hit the NCAA B qualifying standard and ranks No. 4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rankings with two weekends in the books. It's second on her team behind USF senior Kamry Lindsey, who surpassed VanDriel's throw with a toss of 155 feet, 8 inches on April 4 at the USD Early Bird meet.
VanDriel, a junior, is also eighth in the NSIC in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 3.25 inches, which was posted at the USD meet on April 4. She finished eighth in the indoor season at the NSIC championships in the shot put.
Teammate and Chamberlain native Tobi Peterson also high in the NSIC rankings early for USF in the shot put. Peterson is 11th in the shot put at 41 feet, 9.75 inches, which she threw in her first outdoor collegiate meet on March 28 at the Wayne State (Neb.) Wildcat Classic. That was good for a sixth-place finish at the meet.
BROOKINGS — South Dakota State University equestrian freshman Emma Riggs, a graduate of Hanson High School, got a taste of college success during the 2024-25 riding season for the Jackrabbits.
A Western rider competing for SDSU in reining, Riggs finished her inaugural season with a 4-6-2 individual record and rode for SDSU at the Eastern College Athletic Conference competition in late March.
She was 3-3 in head-to-head individual matchups during the fall portion of the season, with wins in matchups against Fresno State, UC Davis and Minnesota-Crookston. Riggs ended the regular season with a victory over Crookston's Marley Halse (71-67.5) on March 8, earning her most outstanding performer honors in the event.
At the ECAC championship on March 27-28 in Martin, Tennessee, Riggs lost her first matchup 67.25 to 66.62 against Minnesota-Crookston, but the Jacks advanced with an 11-9 win. Against top-seeded UT-Martin in the semifinal round, Riggs was on the short end of a 70 to 69.5 score in reining while riding Amos. The Skyhawks defeated the Jacks as a team 11-9.
SDSU's season ended with a 4-9 head-to-head record.
YANKTON — Hanson High School product Alyssa Moschell was the top contributing freshman for the Mount Marty University women's basketball team this season.
Moschell played in 25 games and shot 54.5% from the field, averaging 1.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She had a season-high nine points in a Dec. 14 loss at Morningside.
