Cara Consuegra's first season as Marquette women's coach ends in second round of WBIT
The first season for Cara Consuegra as head coach of the Marquette women's basketball team has come to a end.
The Golden Eagles fell to James Madison, 80-76, in overtime in the second round of the WBIT on Sunday in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
It was the first overtime game of the season for MU (21-11).
Skylar Forbes had 25 points, eight rebounds and three blocks and fellow sophomore forward Halle Vice added a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Those two players have become solid building blocks for Consuegra, who was named the Big East co-coach of the year as MU exceeded preseason expectations.
Forbes set the school record for blocks in a season with 54, breaking Christine Kennedy's mark of 53. Vice had eight double-doubles this season.
Kseniia Kozlova gave the Dukes (30-5) the lead with two free throws in the first minute of overtime, and James Madison held off every MU surge.
Consuegra had an impressive first season after scrambling to fill the roster when she was hired in the spring.
The Golden Eagles' 13-2 record at the Al McGuire Center tied the best mark by a first-year coach. She also guided MU to five road wins in the Big East, the most by a first-year head coach in program history.
