Browns and Russell Wilson may have no other option but each other in NFL free agency
The Cleveland Browns may just be left with Russell Wilson, or the other way around, as the NFL free agency veteran quarterback market has dwindled.
Daniel Jones has signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Geno Smith has been traded to the Las Vegas Raiders and Sam Darnold has signed with the Seattle Seahawks to take his place. Justin Fields lands in New York with the Jets, making a large amount of money in the process. Jacoby Brissett joins former Browns coach Drew Petzing in Arizona, Mac Jones has signed in the Bay Area, and now Jameis Winston has signed with the New York Giants.
The Browns have traded for former first round pick Kenny Pickett, swapping Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth round pick. However, they remain in search of another veteran quarterback and potentially a rookie in the form of Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Miami's Cam Ward, or Alabama's Jalen Milroe if they opt to wait until Day 2.
With Winston signing with the Giants, Wilson's ideal landing spot is now likely off the board. This leaves Cleveland or a return to Pittsburgh. There is one problem with returning to the Steelers, however: they don't want him back. They wanted Fields over him before the former Ohio State quarterback signed with the Jets instead. Now that they've missed out on Fields, all of their attention has turned to Aaron Rodgers.
While Rodgers has not signed with the Steelers just yet, there is no other starting landing spot for him outside of Pittsburgh either unless he wants to come to Cleveland. That has not been even a discussion to this point though. Wilson has been to Cleveland for a visit, leaving without a deal.
Now that he is out of options, the Browns may be able to not only sign him but drive his price down after the two sides have already met in Berea. The only other quarterbacks left on the market that the Browns have sniffed around are Kirk Cousins and Carson Wentz. The issue with Cousins is that the Browns would now have to trade an asset for him and pay him more than they would have had to if the Atlanta Falcons opted to cut him instead of holding him hostage. Signing Wentz would be a cry for help.
This might lead Wilson to them and them to Wilson. Not only that but with no other suitors, the Browns may be able to drive his price down to get him to Cleveland as well.
