Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers to begin the season on the injured list
PHOENIX — The results from imaging done on Tobias Myers' left oblique were "better news" than the Milwaukee Brewers thought they were going to receive, but the right-hander will still start the season on the injured list, manager Pat Murphy said Monday.
"He got the MRI back and he's got an oblique strain," Murphy said. "They feel it's something we can get under control fairly quick."
Considering the dicey nature of oblique injuries, even minor ones, that's a positive development for Myers, who felt something pull in his side during the second inning of his start Saturday against the Angels. The right-hander will be reevaluated in a week and if cleared he could begin throwing shortly thereafter.
But that still puts Myers on the 15-day injured list to open the season, which begins March 27 against the New York Yankees. A return in April "could be in play," Murphy said, but it nevertheless throws an already-thinned rotation into more flux.
Aaron Ashby and DL Hall remained sidelined, with the latter on the injured list until at least late May. Brandon Woodruff made his first outing against big-league opposition in 18 months on Sunday, but just went one inning and will need to build all the way back up along with a lengthy rehab assignment. José Quintana, who threw two innings Sunday in his first Cactus League outing this spring, still has two more starts in Arizona on the schedule, and the earliest we might see him make his Brewers debut is the end of the second series of the year against Kansas City.
A four-man rotation isn't something the Brewers prefer to utilize early in the year, even with an off-day following opening day, but it's going to on the table as the club discusses all possible options for the rotation early in the year.
Tyler Alexander is one candidate to slide into the rotation in Myers' absence, while prospect Logan Henderson is another name Murphy has thrown out to reporters. Elvin Rodriguez or Connor Thomas could also be available for a spot start if Quintana isn't ready by the second week of the year.
The Brewers, as Murphy has been wont to say this spring, "are reconnoitering it."
