The Frozen Four started on Thursday night in St. Louis. It started in the evening when the Western Michigan Broncos took on Chicago Blackhawks prospect Aidan Thompson and the Denver Pioneers.
After WMU took a 2-0 lead into the third period, Thompson scored a goal to get his team back in the game. Eventually, Denver tied it up and forced overtime.
After one extra period wasn't enough, the Broncos won the game under a minute into double overtime. This ended what was a brilliant season for Thompson and Denver, who were trying to go back-to-back. There will be a new champion in 2025.
Immediately following the semi-final game number one, the second game between the Boston University Terriers and Penn State Nittany Lions took place. Blackhawks prospect Ryan Greene is the captain of the Terriers.
Like WMU, BU took a 2-0 lead into the third period. Like Denver, Penn State scored a goal early in the third period to get back in it. This time, however, the team with the lead (BU) threw one into an empty net and won 3-1.
It will be Ryan Greene and the Terriers against a pesky Western Michigan squad that continues to surprise people at every stop.
The Blackhawks have to love what they are seeing from Greene in his development before he even reaches their organization professionally. Jay Pandolfo and his staff at Boston University have done great things for him.
You can go a long way in sports if you do the right things and work hard. Greene is a shining example of that. He will make a wonderful middle-six checking forward with a touch of offense in the NHL because of his intangibles alone.
Blackhawks fans can watch Greene and the Terriers take on the Broncos in the National Championship on Saturday at 7 PM CT on ESPN2 and ESPN+.
