Bills general manager open to signing NFL's active sack leader now or during season
The Buffalo Bills made three additions to their defensive line in free agency. The trio has 113 career sacks.
Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane has an edge rusher on speed dial - or nowadays favorites in his contact list - who has more sacks by himself.
Beane said the team is open to re-signing recently-released Von Miller.
Miller is a two-time Super Bowl champion and the the NFL's active career sacks leader with 129. He was let go by the Bills on March 9.
Miller would've had a $23.8 million cap hit in 2025. Buffalo saved $8.4 million by parting ways but took on $15.4 million in dead cap money. For Miller to return it'd logically be a one-year deal for less than $8.4 million.
"I had a very good conversation with (Miller) the day before we released him. Would never close the door on bringing him back, whether it's now, whether it's later in the spring or in season," Beane said at a press conference Friday. "Beyond his skillset on the field, he brought championship mentality to our team, to the guys. If he's not back he'd be missed in that standpoint for sure."
Buffalo may welcome Miller, 35, back sooner than initially expected.
The Bills signed edge rusher Joey Bosa (72 sacks), defensive lineman-turned-outside linebacker Michael Hoecht (13.5 sacks) and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (27.5 sacks) last week.
Bosa, who was a menace with four double-digit sack seasons from 2016-2021, has missed 23 games over the last three years, and Hoecht and Ogunjobi have each been suspended six games for violating the league's PED policy.
Miller signed a six-year $120 million contract with Buffalo in 2022. He had eight sacks in his first nine games in a Bills uniform but tore his ACL on Thanksgiving. Miller admittedly rushed back from the injury and recorded three tackles and zero sacks in 2023. He was effective in 2024 as a situational pass rusher with six sacks. Miller is familiar with the system, the locker room and the organization's quest for a Lombardi Trophy.
"Tough deal, love Von. Really appreciate what he brought here," Beane said. "We all know his Year 1 really started off with a bang, made some clutch sacks for us to help close some games. Had the injury Year 2, not what he had hoped for. I felt last year really came back and did some good things."
