Bengals: Yes Joe Burrow threw his weight around behind the scenes, too
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow threw his weight around by publicly pressuring the front office last year nearly every time he got in front of a microphone.
Naturally, then, it stands to reason that Burrow was doing the same thing behind the scenes while pushing the team to get long-term extensions for both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins done.
Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz has confirmed this, writing the following on social media:
"A key factor in the Ja'Marr Chase/Tee Higgins negotiations was Joe Burrow’s influence. Beyond his public comments, Burrow also applied private pressure, making it clear deals must get done for both. If Cincy failed, this could have gotten VERY interesting."
Bengals fans don't need to see the name Carson Palmer to know where this is going.
Had the Bengals failed to extend both Chase and Higgins after multiple years of losing talented players like Jessie Bates and DJ Reader, it would have sent the wrong message to Burrow. That's especially the case when, clearly, actually getting both done was more than possible and shouldn't hurt the long-term building plans.
So far, the Bengals have done what Burrow asked on three of four names with Chase, Higgins and Mike Gesicki back for the long-term. The odd man out, at least for now, is Trey Hendrickson -- but the rumblings are swirling.
