Bengals, Trey Hendrickson contract standoff gets another update
The contract and trade updates between the Cincinnati Bengals and star defensive end Trey Hendrickson continue to follow a similar theme.
It's not a hard theme to pick up on, either: Hendrickson wants a new contract and was granted permission to seek a trade. That trade hasn't happened despite interest because of Cincinnati's trade asking price and/or Hendrickson's desired new contract.
Sunday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler appeared on SportsCenter and hit those points again.
"And there's interest, there is trade interest from other teams trying to make this work, but it would take a really hefty trade package," Fowler said (h/t Bleacher Report's Timothy Rapp). "Teams aren't willing to do that and pay Hendrickson right now. So, as much as I want to go with the field, I still think they can work something out, Hendrickson and the Bengals, on a new deal. It's been stagnant of late, it's sort of stalled, but they have a couple of months at least to try to shake this out and get a new deal done."
The Bengals appear to have all the leverage now that waves of free agency have passed. The neediest teams plugged holes on rosters already and Hendrickson is technically under contract for one more year at $16 million. His sitting out and taking fines while approaching the age of 31 is unlikely. Cincinnati also isn't exactly motivated to lose Hendrickson right now at a cheap trade cost.
Right now, this mimics Hendrickson's trade request and even the retirement threat from previous years. He's undoubtedly underpaid compared to his NFL-sack-leading production, but the Bengals appear to be in the driver's seat again.
