‘Beating Real Madrid is very difficult, but…’ – Villarreal coach sounds warning
Villarreal manager Marcelino is fully aware of the challenge that awaits his team as they prepare to take on Real Madrid.
The coach believes that for Villarreal to stand any chance of securing a victory, they will need to reach “the highest level of play”.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated fixture, Marcelino described the upcoming clash as “super attractive and beautiful”.
Facing Real Madrid
Facing Real Madrid is always a massive challenge, particularly given their dominance both in Spain and on the European stage. However, Marcelino remains optimistic about his team’s chances.
“Beating Madrid, the reigning La Liga and Champions League champions, is very difficult, but that doesn’t mean we won’t try with effort, intention, and enthusiasm,” he added.
The coach stressed that his players must not only focus on defending well but also make Madrid uncomfortable by forcing them to retreat and defend deep in their own half.
“They have an extraordinary level of attacking players, the best in the world. We have to make them run back, defend, and make decisions in their own box,”
Praise for Ancelotti
Marcelino also took a moment to praise Real Madrid’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti.
He highlighted the Italian’s incredible career as both a player and a coach, recognising his ability to maintain humility and professionalism despite winning every major trophy.
“He’s always respectful and kind. Whether he wins, loses, or draws. Before and after. For me, he’s a role model both professionally and personally. I have the utmost respect and affection for him,” he noted.
Real Madrid’s fatigue
Acknowledging Real Madrid’s demanding schedule, Marcelino admitted that it would have been more logical for the match to take place on Sunday rather than Saturday, especially given Madrid’s recent Champions League fixture.
However, he downplayed any suggestion that fatigue would significantly impact their performance.
He pointed out that elite players at a club like Real Madrid are accustomed to playing multiple matches each week and that coming off a European win will likely serve as further motivation for them.
“They’re coming off an extension, but all their players are used to playing three games a week. I don’t think Wednesday’s game will have a negative impact, especially if you’re coming off a win,” he added.
