As predicted, showers moved through Georgia overnight after Thursday’s first round of the Masters. Things were looking better before the start of Friday’s second round, though Augusta National Golf Club wasn’t in the clear yet.
What’s the weather forecast for Friday at Augusta?
As of 7 a.m. Friday morning, AccuWeather was predicting a 43 percent chance of rain in Augusta. That forecast included a call for increasing winds throughout the day, with a chance of passing thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winds are being called to build to 16 mph from the west with gusts up to 39 mph if storms move through, and there is a chance of hail associated with any storms.
Augusta National also does a weather report, and in its 7 a.m. Friday forecast the club called for decreasing cloudiness throughout the morning, becoming partly cloudy to mostly sunny for a portion of the late morning and early afternoon. The later afternoon could be a mix of sun and clouds with strong breeze and a few passing showers. The club called for a 30 percent chance of rain at 3 p.m. and a 35 percent of rain at 5 p.m.
What happens if there is a rain delay?
Friday’s first tee time was 7:40 a.m., and the last tee time of the day is 1:45 p.m. If play is delayed long enough by storms Friday, players will complete the second round Saturday morning, when the 36-hole cut will be made to the top 50 players and ties. Sunset will be at 7:56 p.m. Friday, so there is some cushion if delays don't run too long.
What is the forecast for the rest of Masters week?
As of Friday’s morning forecast, AccuWeather was predicting great golf weather for Saturday and Sunday in Augusta. Saturday’s forecast included a zero percent chance of rain with a high temperature of 67. Sunday also had a zero percent chance of rain and a high of 71 degrees for the final day of the Masters. Augusta National’s forecasts were similar.
