ASK IRA: Is anything guaranteed regarding this Heat roster going forward?
Q: The two constants this season have been Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, and the Heat has not consistently won with those two. I know this might be hard to accept, but is it time to move on from both and start again? Maybe trade each for a pair of players and at least have more options. – Theo.
A: In the NBA, volume of talent rarely eclipses level of talent. The goal is to get the best possible players and build around them. So if you trade Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro for a pair of players each half as good, you might be better able to fill out a roster, but you won’t be able to compete with elite talent. That said, in light of the considerable transformation created by the trade of Jimmy Butler, if there ever was a time to consider the futures of Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, a case could be made for such a moment being at hand. That is not, in any way, putting the blame at their feet. It is, rather, the reality of a franchise reset already in progress.

Q: Ira, the first three quarters are meaningless if you can’t finish, and now the players are saying they are playing too fast in the fourth quarter. So why not play a style that wins through the entire game? If they can’t win playing fast in the fourth, why play fast earlier? – Sid.
A: Because have you seen the Heat play slow? Without a true playmaking point guard, it often is the random baskets in translation and off turnovers that keep the Heat afloat, the type of baskets that good teams might allow through three periods but then deny in the fourth. So much of what is wrong with the Heat comes down to an offense that all too often appears rudderless.
Q: Does Pat Riley only think this is a “tough stretch”? Has he looked at the standings? — James.
A. This came in the wake of Pat Riley mentioning his team‘s “tough stretch” while speaking ahead of Saturday’s Family Festival charity event at Kaseya Center. I would not read anything into such comments, since it was made clear ahead of time that only questions regarding the charitable event would be addressed. Such is neither the time nor place for any type of deep dive regarding the state of the franchise. At this point, that will come soon enough, potentially within three weeks. Say what you want about the direction of the team, but it has continued to prioritize commitment to community. That is what Saturday was about.
