Arteta promises Arsenal fans a big summer transfer window, but which positions must they fill?

Arsenal look set to finish in second place in the Premier League for a third successive season. The Gunners struggled to keep pace with Liverpool and find themselves 12 points behind the champions-elect.

Injuries blighted the team at the worst possible time, derailing their momentum. Many blamed manager Mikel Arteta for opting for a small squad, leaving the team needing depth.

This summer is a chance to correct that mistake and new sporting director Andrea Berta will be tasked with beefing the squad up.

Arteta has now promised Arsenal fans that the North Londoners will go big this summer to bring in the reinforcement they need to challenge for a whole season, claiming that those within the club are “excited about it.”

Arsenal are in a healthy place financially, but they still need to be prudent by picking important positions to strengthen.

Read on as we analyse which areas the Gunners must reinforce this summer as they look to end their 20+ year wait for a league title next term.

Striker

Top of the agenda for the Gunners has to be a lethal striker to lead the line. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are underwhelming. One should be sold to make way for a new centre-forward.

The Gunners are reportedly shifting focus to Sporting CP Viktor Gyokeres after getting priced out of a deal for his compatriot Alexander Isak.

Gyokeres is on course to take Sporting to a second successive Primeira Liga title and would fit in the Arsenal attack like the glove it has been missing. A striker is atop the transfer list, and rightly so.

Right-wing

Arsenal talisman Bukayo Saka has been on the treatment table for the past three months and they have felt his absence. Unfortunately, the Gunners do not have an adept replacement.

Arteta needs a winger who can step up when he decides to rest the England international. The Gunners must sign a player who operates on that right flank and can deliver the goods when called upon.

Links to potential free agent Leroy Sane are floating about, and he would be a welcome addition to the Arsenal squad, although it remains to be seen if he will accept a back-up role.

Central midfield

With Jorginho and Thomas Partey likely leaving this summer, the Gunners must add steel to their engine room. Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is the top target, but they should add another body.

Ideally, Arsenal should keep Partey, who is still at the top of the game, while adding Zubimendi to the mix. There might not be enough money in the coffers for two top-class midfield operators.

Berta is a fan of Newcastle man Bruno Guimaraes, whom the club has had eyes on for some time. However, like in the Isak case, they will not be keen on parting ways.

Left-wing

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli rule the Arsenal left flank, but it is time to refresh that area. The Gunners could use fresh ideas and legs.

It may not be high on the summer wishlist, but Arsenal should consider adding an electric winger opposite Saka to take some of the burden off his shoulders.
