Arizona State true freshman reportedly headed to transfer portal
The transfer portal opens on Monday and one Arizona State basketball standout already appears headed there.
True freshman Joson Sanon is reportedly planning to enter the portal. He played in 29 games, starting nine of those for the Sun Devils. He missed five games with an ankle injury sustained in the Big 12 opener against BYU and struggled with his shooting after returning.
The 6-foot-5 shooting guard averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds. His season-high of 28 points came in a road loss at Utah. He averaged 18.8 points over the last five games of the season.
ASU head coach Bobby Hurley has called Sanon the best shooter he has ever coached. That showed before the true freshman was injured, as he was shooting 50% from three-point range.
Sanon had been part of Hurley's 2024 recruiting class, which was a top 10 class nationally and also included Jayden Quaintance and Amier Ali. Sanon, a native of Fall River, Massachusetts, who prepped at Vermont Academy, was reportedly going to be a one-and-done. The injury seemed to derail that plan.
ASU (13-19) will play in the College Basketball Crown with the Sun Devils facing Nebraska in their opener on March 31 in Las Vegas. It is unknown if Sanon's transfer intent will render him unavailable for that event.
ASU had football players who entered the transfer portal and still played in the Jan. 1 Peach Bowl.
