All-State release caps an 'amazing' season for Blue Jay swimmers
Mar. 22—JAMESTOWN — Finn Moser had a lot of thoughts rolling in his head at the beginning of November.
His mom told him to write them down.
"I had a lot of goals at the beginning of the season," said Moser, a freshman swimmer for the Jamestown High School Swimming and Diving Team. "My mom gave me the meet schedule and told me to write down what I wanted to accomplish during the season or at specific meets.
"I didn't achieve all of them, but those are goals I'm aiming to get next season," he said.
Moser was one of three Blue Jay swimmers named to the 2025 Boys Swimming and Diving All-State Team on March 18.
"There were a few weeks left of practice and my coach told me I had made All-State," JHS junior Zach Hanson said. "Making All-State is a pretty huge achievement and I was excited I made the team again. I think I did do enough. I had a goal set in my head to get in shape this year, and I achieved that by losing 35 pounds. Although my lifetime goal of breaking the record in the 50 freestyle did not happen, I broke two school records with my relays."
Hanson and Moser are second-time, All-State team members. This season marks the first time Kaden Fabian has been named to the All-State team.
"I actually had no idea I made All-State team until you messaged me telling me I got it," Fabian said. "It was a really big deal to me, I didn't really think that I was going to make it at the start of the year, but during the end I realized how possible it could be to get it. I worked very hard all season for it. I put in a lot of time and effort every day and I definitely exceeded my expectations for this year."
Fabian said coming into this season, he was just hoping to clock a sub-50 second 100 yard freestyle.
"I beat it by way more than I thought," Fabian said. "I ended up getting a 48:25 at State. It was way better than what I thought I could do this year."
His time in the 100 free isn't the only thing Fabian has to be proud of.
Fabian, Moser, Hanson, and Noah Lynch now hold the 200 freestyle relay record at 1 minute, 29.22 seconds. Hanson, Moser, Fabian and Lynch also broke the standing 400 freestyle relay record. The new record swum by the foursome stands at 3:16.76.
Fabian said he will be taking a month break from swimming before he begins competing with the Prairie Rose (PRO) Swim Club.
"I want to give a shout out to my team and coaches," Fabian said. "It was amazing season and I can't wait to see what it's going to be like next year."
"Amazing" is a good word to describe the last three months.
Jamestown entered the West Region Swimming and Diving Meet as the No. 1 team in the WDA. The team finished out its regular season schedule at 7-0 in conference and 10-1 overall.
As a team, the Blue Jays placed fourth at the West Region Meet and seventh at State. At the state meet, the Blue Jays recorded a team score of 147. Jamestown had 11 swimmers qualify for State. Head coach Ben Smith was named the 2025 WDA and NDHSCA Boys Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year.
The 2025 State Swimming and Diving Meet was the site of Moser's latest record-breaking performance.
Moser broke his own 500 freestyle school record set in 2024 by more than seven seconds at State. The school record now stands at 4 minutes, 50.60 seconds.
"There were other individual records I wanted to break this season, but those are on my radar for next season," Moser said. "I'm thankful for all the work my coaches have put in to helping me become better and believing in me. I'm excited to keep swimming for them during the club season."
Moser is currently swimming with PRO Swim Club, and will compete in the North Dakota Short Course Club State meet this weekend. After this weekend, Moser will start preparing for the Long Course season, which will run through the summer months.
"I want to continue to get better throughout my high school career, hopefully achieve more of my goals, and do my best to grow our team," Moser said. "It's been awesome having more and more guys join the team each season."
