Aaliyah Chavez decision: Texas misses out to Oklahoma for nation's top basketball recruit
The Texas women's basketball program found out on Tuesday that Aaliyah Chavez won't continue her career in Austin.
Chavez — a 5-foot-11 guard rated by ESPN HoopGurlz as the No. 1 recruit in the nation — committed to Oklahoma in an ESPN-televised ceremony at Lubbock Monterey High School. Texas was among her finalists; Chavez took an official visit to Texas in September and was in attendance at Moody Center as the Longhorns beat Florida to clinch a share of the SEC regular-season championship. But in the end, she opted for the Sooners after also considering LSU, South Carolina, UCLA and Texas Tech.
Chavez's decision leaves Aaliyah Crump as the lone member of UT's 2025 recruiting class. A 6-foot-1 guard who's attending Florida's Montverde Academy, Crump is the No. 5 prospect in the country.
Had Chavez picked UT, she would have become the highest-rated recruit of Vic Schaefer's five-year tenure. That will remain Crump, who bested Aaliyah Moore (No. 6 in 2021), Jordan Lee (No. 9 in 2024), Rori Harmon (No. 10 in 2021), Madison Booker (No. 12 in 2023) and Justice Carlton (No. 12 in 2024) in the rankings.
Chavez, Gatorade's national player of the year and a McDonald's All-American, averaged 34.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.7 steals as a senior. She scored nearly 4,800 points in her high school career.
In her final game, Chavez led Lubbock Monterey to a 64-35 win over Liberty Hill in the Class 5A Division II championship game. Chavez had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the victory.
Chavez will join an Oklahoma team that's currently 27-7 and bound for the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. She was spotted in the Lloyd Noble Center crowd at the Sooners' first-round game against Florida Gulf Coast this past weekend.
