5 March Madness upset predictions, Cinderella picks for 2025 NCAA women’s tournament
March Madness is finally here and the Women's NCAA Tournament is getting ready to tip off.
Every year some team comes around and ruins your bracket or gives you bragging rights for being the genius who picked it. While there is the classic 5-12 upset pick, plenty of teams could be on an upset watch heading into the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, including two SEC teams that enter the tournament with the wrong kind of momentum and fell of the hosting lines.
The tournament starts Friday with first-round games, and the upsets could start as soon as the first game tips off.
Women's March Madness bracket predictions: 5 upsets to watch for in NCAA Tournament First Round
10-seed South Dakota State over 7-seed Oklahoma State
The Jackrabbits have been one of the better small-conference programs over the last few seasons, making three straight NCAA tournaments. They have just one win in that stretch but did make a Sweet 16 run back in 2019. While replicating that brings challenges, getting to the second round brings its own reward against the third team out of the Big 12.
11-seed George Mason over 6-seed Florida State
George Mason is on a Cinderella run and playing with house money at this point. Florida State ended the season ranked in the USA Today's Coaches Poll, so George Mason has a tall task ahead.
12-seed South Florida over Tennessee
Tennessee has not been playing its best basketball since a win over UConn at the start of February. The Lady Vols have lost four key games down the stretch, including a disappointing 84-76 loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament. South Florida battled its way through the American Athletic Conference Tournament to make the big dance and brings a stout defense tat allows 60 points per game.
12-seed Green Bay over 5-seed Alabama
Another classic 5-12 upset could be a likely pick with the stout defense from the Phoenix and how the Crimson Tide has come into the tournament losing its last two games. Green Bay is on a 22-game winning streak dating back to mid-December and brings a veteran group led by Natalie McNeal, who leads the team in points and rebounding. Alabama has the ability to run away with this game, but only if its offense shows up.
13-seed Grand Canyon over 4-seed Baylor
Another mid-major program that has won a bunch this year and comes in on a long win streak, with the Antelopes on a 30-game streak. Baylor finished runner-up in the Big 12 and will get the added benefit of being at home for the first round.
