Barcelona blitz Wolfsburg in Women's Champions League quarter-final win
Barcelona Femení have placed one foot in the door to the Women's Champions League semi-finals after a resounding 4-1 win against Frauen-Bundesliga giant Wolfsburg.
Scorers: Minge 79'; Dijkstra (own goal) 26', Paredes 50', Paralluelo 53', Schertenleib 88'
After blitzing the group stage and finishing ahead of Women's Super League side Manchester City, Barcelona continue to look like the tournament favourite after yet another scintillating performance on the continent.
Barça got off the mark on the night in the 26th minute after Wolfsburg's Caitlin Dijkstra was credited with an own goal.
Summer signing and hotshot Polish international striker Ewa Pajor, who formerly starred for Die Wölfinnen, was picked out for service after a brilliant darting run into the area by Aitana Bonmatí.
The Spanish international's low cross to the near post for Pajor to tap home was intercepted well by Dijkstra, who could only watch her block trickle over the line.
Pere Romeu's outfit remained the dominant side despite being away from home on the night, holding Wolfsburg to just one shot and a mere 26% of the possession pie while looking rather comfortable come the halftime interval.
It would only take five minutes after the restart for Barça to double their advantage at AOK Stadion, with veteran centre-back Irene Paredes converting from Mapi León's whipped cross to the near post.
Their lead would be extended by a third goal just three minutes later by Spanish youngster Salma Paralluelo when her goal-bound effort in the wake of receiving Bonmatí's diagonal ball into the box deflected past Wolfsburg goalkeeper Anneke Borbe.
Tommy Stroot's outfit were finally able to peg one back on the scoresheet and bag a critical aggregate goal through Janina Minge's header from a Lynn Wilms out-swinging corner in the 79th minute.
However, any hope of a potential second-leg comeback was all but snuffed out entirely just two minutes before the end of normal time after 18-year-old Swiss international forward Sydney Schertenleib applied a tidy finish.
With that, Barça are surely marching on to the semi-finals and a titanic clash with either Chelsea or Manchester City, who are due to kick off later this evening.
