Watch live: Harris adds signature to VP desk, carrying on decades-long tradition

Vice President Harris will mark the final days of the Biden administration by signing her desk drawer in the ceremonial White House office Thursday afternoon, carrying on a tradition that began under former President John F. Kennedy.

The top drawer of the desk has been signed by various users since the 1940s. The first vice president to use, and sign, the desk was former President Lyndon B. Johnson, who served in the No. 2 spot before he was sworn into the Oval Office after Kennedy's assassination.

The event was originally set to take place Jan. 8, but Harris opted to reschedule to focus on the raging wildfires in her home state of California.

The vice president earlier this month posted that she also recently signed the desk that she used while representing the Golden State in the Senate from 2017 until 2021.

"Last week, I signed the drawer of the desk I sat at while serving as a United States Senator from California," she wrote on social platform X. "I was proud to inscribe my name amongst those Senators who came before me."

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff is expected to join her Wednesday at the ceremony.

The event is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. EST.
