Vance resigning his Senate seat at midnight
Vice President-elect JD Vance (R-Ohio) announced on Thursday he will resign from his seat in the Senate, effective at the start of Friday.
Vance sent his resignation letter on Thursday to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) as he readies for the next four years in the White House.
"As I prepare to assume my duties as Vice President of the United States, I would like to express that it has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate over the past two years,” Vance wrote in his letter to DeWine.
DeWine will appoint a replacement for Vance, who served only two years of his six-year term in the Senate. The appointed senator will serve in Vance’s seat until a special election is held in 2026. Another election will then be held in 2028.
Vance issued a separate statement Thursday, thanking Ohioans for “the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate.”
“When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I’ve made sure to live by that promise every single day,” he continued.
“The American people have granted President Trump an undeniable mandate to put America first, both at home and abroad. Over the next four years, I will do all that I can to help President Trump enact his agenda. Together, we will make America stronger, safer, and more prosperous than ever before.”
Vance and President-elect Trump will be sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2025.
