Trump takes credit for latest Israeli hostage release: 'Today the world celebrates'
The Trump administration responded Saturday to the latest hostage release amid the ceasefire between Israel and militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, seemingly taking credit after four Israeli female soldiers were freed.
“Today the world celebrates as President Trump secured the release of four more Israeli hostages who were, for far too long, held against their will by Hamas in horrific conditions," the White House said in a statement.
"The United States will continue with its great partner Israel to push for the release of all remaining hostages and the pursuit of peace throughout the region," the statement reads.
The remarks come after the hostages — Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy and Liri Albag — were released under the latest ceasefire agreement which took effect less than a week ago. In return, the Jewish State released 70 Palestinian prisoners.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said the women will undergo medical assessments once they reach Israel and will be reunited with their families.
After months of tense negotiations, Israel and Hamas agreed to a deal earlier this month, bringing a pause to nearly 15 months of fighting after the militant group's initial attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The first phase of the agreement, negotiated by the U.S., Qatar and Egypt, includes a six-weak ceasefire with Hamas agreeing to release 33 hostages including civilian women, female soldiers, children, the elderly and the sick.
Men and other Israeli soldiers could also be released during the second phase.
After the deal was announced, former President Biden and Trump both claimed credit for the success. Biden brushed off comments about Trump being responsible for the agreement, but acknowledged that his transition team played a part in convincing the two sides to sign on.
Now, after taking office for the second time Monday, Trump will have to take the reins on the oversight of the fragile truce.
