Israel-Lebanon ceasefire extended: White House
The White House said that a ceasefire involving Israel and Lebanon had been extended in a Sunday statement.
The ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, announced by former President Biden in November, is now set “to be in effect until February 18, 2025,” the statement reads. An earlier ceasefire agreement had a time span of 60 days in which Israel would pull out its army from southern Lebanon as the Lebanese Armed Forces would start deployments in the same area.
The Sunday statement from the White House on the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire comes only a week after a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas went into effect on the last day of the Biden presidency.
A Biden White House principal deputy national security adviser said last Sunday that President Trump’s team provided “significant support” in the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.
“We got significant support from the Trump team. We [have] been, you know, very transparent about that. We’ve kept them fully up to speed,” Jon Finer told ABC News’s Jonathan Karl on “This Week.”
“They deployed members of their incoming team to the region. The president said — president-elect said helpful things about the need to get this deal done,” he added.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said last week that the Israel-Hamas ceasefire “deal would not have been struck without the forceful hand of President Trump and his Special Envoy @SteveWitkoff.”
“Once again, peace through strength prevails,” she added in a post on the social platform X.
