Top DOJ official, Trump border czar in Chicago overseeing immigration enforcement 'efforts'
A top Department of Justice (DOJ) official and President Trump’s “border czar” were in Chicago overseeing “immigration enforcement efforts,” according to officials.
“The DEA, along with our @TheJusticeDept partners, is assisting @DHSgov and other federal law enforcement partners with their immigration enforcement efforts,” the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Chicago Division said in a Sunday post on the social platform X.
Featured in the DEA’s post were pictures of “border czar” Tom Homan and acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove. Bove and Homan, according to text that accompanied one of the photos, were at “an operational pre-briefing in Chicago on Sunday.”
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with federal partners, including the FBI, ATF, DEA, CBP and the U.S. Marshals Service, began conducting enhanced targeted operations today in Chicago to enforce U.S. immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in a statement on their website Sunday.
Amid the 2024 presidential election, Trump made the issue of immigration central to his campaign. During his first day in office, he went forward with a whirlwind of executive orders on the subject, going ahead with multiple actions set to intensely limit immigration.
In Chicago on Sunday, TV host Phil McGraw was alongside Homan “live” on Merit TV, a television network he is behind, according to an email from Merit Street Media to The Hill. The email also said Sunday morning “raids” were captured by McGraw.
“We will support everyone at the federal, state, and local levels who joins this critical mission to take back our communities,” a statement obtained by Nexstar affiliate WGN from Bove reads. “We will use all available tools to address obstruction and other unlawful impediments to our efforts to protect the homeland. Most importantly, we will not rest until the work is done.”
The Hill has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and ICE for comment.
