Raskin: Democrats 'going to be in good shape to exploit' GOP conflicts
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said Monday that his party is well positioned to benefit from GOP conflicts in the House during the new Congress, with Republicans in control of both chambers.
“I think we're gonna be in good shape to exploit some of the conflicts and contradictions going on within the Republican conference,” Raskin told “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart.
Raskin pointed to a few early examples, including the "racist MAGA base" fuming at Elon Musk over his support for high-skilled foreign worker visas used widely by tech companies.
“And so, that's something that's already starting to explode in terms of Republican politics,” Raskin said.
“But, there's a bunch of issues like that, including abortion, where there's still some libertarians who don't wanna go near it, but the theocratic majority within MAGA, led by Mike Johnson, say that life begins at conception, and so they've been trying to ban it nationally,” he added. “And we expect that to come back, and hopefully we'll be able to pull over some of the lingering pro-choice Republicans.”
Raskin’s comments come after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) narrowly secured the Speaker's gavel again last week. He is already facing divided views on how the House and Senate should pass a major Republican reconciliation bill.
“We’re 15 days out from the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump for his second term. And we want to make sure that we’re jump-starting the agenda now over the next two weeks, so that he’s prepared and ready on day one,” Johnson said.
“We have a lot to do, as you know. And we have been putting all the plays together and figuring out the sequence of how we’re going to run those plays. And we’re really excited about it.”
