Ocasio-Cortez says Trump's Madison Square Garden event one of his 'mini Jan. 6 rallies'
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called former President Trump’s Madison Square Garden event one of his “mini Jan. 6 rallies,” saying he is readying his supporters to reject the results of any election he loses.
“This was not just a presidential rally. This was also not just a campaign rally,” the progressive Democrat said during an MSBNC appearance Monday morning.
“I think it's very important for people to understand that these are mini Jan. 6 rallies. These are mini 'Stop the Steal' rallies. These are rallies to prime an electorate into rejecting the results of an election if it doesn't go the way that they want.”
The Democratic representative of the Bronx and parts of Queens also said Trump and his affiliates “do not respect the law of the United States of America,” describing the campaign as “unhinged" and the event as "hate rally."
She touched in the offensive jokes comedian Tony Hinchcliffe delivered before Trump took the stage Sunday night, in which he called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” and made other inflammatory comments at the expense of Latinos, Black men and the Jewish community.
“This is not a comedian. This is the Trump campaign. They invited this rhetoric on their stage for a reason,” said Ocasio-Cortez, whose family hails from Puerto Rico.
In another appearance on CNN on Monday morning, Ocasio-Cortez touched on Trump’s “intentional neglect” of the island, citing his response after 2017's Hurricane Maria and his consideration of selling the island after the natural disaster.
“This is what these people believe, and it’s not a joke,” she said.
The Trump campaign has already tried to distance itself from the jokes, with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt saying Monday morning on Fox News that the jokes were made in “poor taste.”
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
