Netanyahu completes prostate surgery
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent a successful prostate removal surgery on Sunday, officials said.
Netanyahu, 75, has had a series of health issues in recent years.
His doctor, Ofer Grofit, the head of the urology department at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center, said in a video statement that Netanyahu’s procedure went well and there was “no fear” of cancer or malignancy, The Associated Press reported.
During the operation, Netanyahu’s close ally, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, served as acting prime minister.
Netanyahu’s health amid the ongoing war in Gaza with Hamas and his trial for alleged corruption is of international concern.
In a statement, Netanyahu’s office said the surgery was successful and did not have complications.
His office said he was awake, “fully alert,” and was taken to an underground unit for recovery in case of missile attacks, the AP reported.
Netanyahu was expected to remain in the hospital for several days for observation.
The surgery comes as Netanyahu's office attempts to bolster his international appearance though the leader has experienced several setbacks over recent years.
In a video posted in July 2023, Netanyahu informed the world that he felt "excellent" but his doctors recommended he get an emergency pacemaker.
The Associated press contributed.
