Most AAPI adults oppose eliminating federal agencies: Survey

A majority of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) and Native Hawaiians disapprove of eliminating federal agencies and mass layoffs of federal workers, according to a poll.

Nearly 60 percent of those surveyed in the group said they “strongly” or “somewhat” oppose eliminating entire federal agencies, according to AAPI Data and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research’s poll released Wednesday.

Only 12 percent were in favor of eliminating whole agencies.

About half of respondents opposed mass layoffs, while only about one-quarter were in favor.

The latest poll follows the Trump administration’s layoffs of more than 100,000 government employees, with additional layoffs yet to come in the Department of Education, NASA and Department of Veterans Affairs. The layoffs are part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new agency led by billionaire Elon Musk.

Though the adults surveyed in the group disapproved of DOGE’s actions, most agreed with the department’s attempts to address major problems of the federal government.

More than 70 percent of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults viewed corruption as a major problem in the federal government, while 68 percent said the same about inefficiency. Additionally, 61 percent said they saw government red tape as a major problem.

But as the layoffs continue, the poll showed that most adults surveyed in the group felt the federal government is prioritizing the wrong issues.

Nearly 80 percent of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults believed the government should be focused on the costs of health care, while 67 percent said the government should focus on the cost of food. About 61 percent believed the government should prioritize the cost of housing.

The survey from Feb. 4–11 sampled 1,170 Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders aged 18 and older living in the United States. The margin of sampling error is 4.7 percentage points.
