Moskowitz reads back GOP 'mean tweets' ahead of CR vote
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) read back some of the “mean tweets” from Republican lawmakers about continuing resolutions (CR) ahead of Tuesday’s vote.
“It’s CR day on Capitol Hill, and what is going on with Republicans? I mean, President Trump puts out a tweet and says, please, and all of a sudden … just flip-flops,” Moskowitz said on the House floor, referencing President Trump’s approval of the GOP-drafted bill.
“You know what? Let me do some mean tweets about how you feel about CRs when you’re in the minority only,” he continued.
Moskowitz referenced a post from January 2024 in which Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said it was “Groundhog Day” in the House because the chamber continued to spend money the country doesn’t have.
“Another colleague says, 'If Congress raises the debt ceiling, passes a CR and rams through an omnibus bill, no member of Congress should receive a paycheck,'" Moskowitz said, referring to a 2024 social media post from Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.). “That’s awkward for you guys. How many of you [are] going to give back your paycheck?”
Moskowitz’s remarks come as lawmakers barrel toward a government spending deadline.
House Republicans advanced their bill on Tuesday to avert a government shutdown at the end of the week, teeing up a final vote on the legislation later in the day.
It’s not known if the bill will have enough support to pass, as Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has maintained he would not vote in favor of it. A number of other Republicans are undecided, even after hearing support from Vice President Vance.
Trump has vowed to “lead the charge” to unseat Massie after he said he doesn’t support the funding bill.
Democrats such as Moskowitz are expected to oppose the legislation in large numbers as they raise concerns about the cuts included in the bill.
Even if the bill passes in the House, its future in the Senate remains unclear, as it needs 60 votes and the GOP will need eight Democrats to push it forward.
Some Senate Democrats are concerned that if they block the agreement it could backfire on them with the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Moskowitz addressed his Republican colleagues ahead of the vote, slamming them for doing what Trump wants.
“So listen, go home to your families, turn in your voting cards, give Trump the gavel, because that is what has happened to your entire party. You don’t need to be here,” he said. “He tells you to do something, you jump.”
