MLK Jr.'s daughter: 'Wonderful' Trump being inaugurated on day celebrating father
Bernice King, the daughter of late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., says the simultaneous occurrence of MLK Day and Inauguration Day this year is an opportunity to reflect on her father's legacy.
“It’s wonderful that this occurs on the King holiday, the inauguration, because it reminds us of King,” King, the youngest of Martin Luther King’s four children, said on MSNBC’s "The Weekend" on Saturday.
King was just 5 years old when her father was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
Despite President-elect Trump’s history of racially-charged remarks, King said the fact that his inauguration coincides with her father's holiday "points us back to King."
"It says, 'When we move forward, we’ve got to do it in the spirit of King,'" she said.
King and her brother, Martin Luther King III, have been outspoken critics of Trump since his first presidential bid.
Trump recently supported North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who was running for governor and allegedly spoke ill of Martin Luther King Jr. Trump compared Robinson to King, saying the gubernatorial candidate was King “on steroids.”
Trump compared himself to the civil rights icon as well.
Trump also falsely claimed his Jan. 6, 2021 “Stop the Steal” rally had more attendees than the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
For those who feel “defeated” by the election outcome, Bernice King said Americans must stay “stay focused on the goal” of nonviolence.
“We have to strategize. We’ve been missing the strategy. We’ve been missing the spirit of Dr. King,” King said. “The spirit of Dr. King is nonviolence. And nonviolence is not just a posture, it’s a mindset. For us, we define it as a love-centered way of thinking, speaking, acting and engaging that leads to personal, cultural and societal transformation.”
