Denny's joins Waffle House in adding egg surcharge

Denny’s is joining Waffle House in adding an egg surcharge, according to a statement from the company.
“Denny’s remains committed to providing our guests with delicious meals they love at the value they expect. We do our best to plan ahead with our vendors on items like eggs to minimize the impact market volatility has on our costs and menu pricing,” the statement reads.
“However, due to the nationwide egg shortage and increased cost of eggs, some of our restaurant locations will need to temporarily add a surcharge to every meal that incudes eggs.”
Nexstar previously reported that an egg surcharge at Waffle House restaurants had started earlier this month. The outlet obtained a memo from the restaurant chain that said a temporary 50-cent-per-egg surcharge would start Feb. 3 on all menus.
Denny’s action on its egg surcharge was described as “market-by-market, and restaurant-by-restaurant due to the regional impacts of the egg shortage,” according to the statement.
Egg prices have surged in recent weeks in part due to a bird flu outbreak. In most cases, when the virus is found to be on farms, every bird has to be killed to help stop the spread. Because the farms can have birds numbering in the millions, a single infection can result in a drastic supply reduction.
“We understand our guests’ desire for value, and we will continue to look for ways to provide options on our menu, including our $2 $4 $6 $8 value menu, while navigating these rapidly changing market dynamics responsibly,” read the Denny’s statement.
