Denmark stresses Greenland not for sale after Trump Jr. arrives on island
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that Greenland is not for sale after President-elect Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., arrived on the Arctic island.
Frederiksen said during a TV interview on Tuesday that Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede “has been very, very clear — that there is a lot of support among the people of Greenland that Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future either.”
She told the Danish television station TV 2 that Greenland’s future will be dictated by Greenland and added that “we need to stay calm and stick to our principles,” while praising the U.S. as Denmark’s crucial ally.
Frederiksen’s comment came just as Trump Jr. landed on the world’s largest island, which has a population of around 60,000 people.
“Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote in a Tuesday Truth Social post that was accompanied by a video of the president-elect’s plane landing on the island.
Trump has expressed interest in purchasing the territory, saying last month that owning the island is “an absolute necessity.”
At the time, Egede said, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”
A source familiar with the matter previously told The Hill that Trump Jr.'s visit is “for a quick daylong trip to shoot some fun video content for podcasting.”
Trump Jr. was accompanied by conservative activist Charlie Kirk and Sergio Gor, who was selected to run the White House’s personnel office, according to a post by Trump Jr. on the social platform X.
