Democrat Elissa Slotkin wins Michigan Senate race
Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D) is projected to win the hotly contested Senate race in Michigan, according to Decision Desk HQ, keeping a key swing-state seat in the Democratic column.
Slotkin, a three-term House lawmaker and former CIA analyst, bested former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers (R), who was recruited to run for the seat. She is set to succeed retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D), who held the seat for more than two decades and endorsed Slotkin to replace her.
The closely watched race was one of just four Senate contests rated "toss-ups” by the Cook Political Report, and DDHQ polling averages heading into Tuesday’s contest showed Slotkin with a slim edge.
Michigan was a major battleground in the presidential race and was seen as key to deciding control of Congress and the White House. President-elect Trump was declared the winner in Michigan earlier on Wednesday, but a Republican hasn’t won a Michigan Senate seat in 30 years.
Slotkin’s jump into the Senate race left her seat in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District up for grabs. Rep.-elect Tom Barrett (R) outlasted Democrat Curtis Hertel for her seat Tuesday in a contest Cook rated “lean Republican.”
