CNN shuffles programming lineup amid network restructuring
CNN is making changes to its weekday lineup as part of a larger restructuring and cost-cutting effort across the company.
The cable channel announced Thursday that longtime anchor Wolf Blitzer's nightly "Situation Room" show will move to mornings, which he will now co-host with anchor Pamela Brown from 10 a.m. to noon.
Anchor Jake Tapper's weeknight newscast is also getting moved and will now air from 5-7 p.m. while anchor Kasie Hunt will move from mornings to an hourlong timeslot at 4 p.m. Hunt currently anchors a show that runs from 5-7 a.m.
Pundit Audie Cornish, who the network hired away from NPR in 2022 as part of a major push into streaming at the time, will helm a new program at 6 a.m.
The changes come as the company announced earlier on Thursday it planned to cut around 200 jobs in its linear broadcast arm as it retools itself with digital and streaming offerings in mind.
The changes come as CNN has seen its ratings dip in recent years as more consumers cut cable in favor of social media platforms and streaming options for news and entertainment.
“The changes we’re announcing today are part of an ongoing response by this great news organization to profound and irreversible shifts in the way audiences in America and around the world consume news,” CEO Mark Thompson said in a note sent to staff.
Thompson praised CNN's coverage of Trump's return to power and said "we’ve already seen more than enough news at home and abroad to be reminded just how important it is that this great news organization succeeds."
