'Attacker with knife' detained after stabbing at University of Virginia, police say
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) – One person is in custody and another is in critical condition after a stabbing near the University of Virginia's Alumni Hall Thursday, according to Nexstar's WRIC.
Just before 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, the UVA Police Division posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, warning students and faculty of an "active attacker with [a] knife," and encouraging them to "RUN HIDE FIGHT."
News of the stabbing prompted the university to announce a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted at 5:44 p.m. after police announced a suspect was in custody.
Police have since provided more details on the incident, which began at 4:38 p.m. with officers receiving report of a stabbing near 100 Emmet St. S, across from the Alumni Hall.
One person was stabbed. They were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Neither the suspect — identified only as a middle-aged man — nor the victim, have any known affiliation with UVA, according to police.
The Charlottesville Police Department will lead the investigation into this incident, as it took place in its jurisdiction.
No further information is available as of the time of reporting.
This was the second time this week that UVA had to shelter in place due to a suspect on the run. The incident on Tuesday, Feb. 25 involved a suspect that Virginia State Police (VSP) said evaded a traffic stop and hit multiple cars, including a VSP vehicle.
