Andy Kim says he worries Jan. 6 has been ‘papered over'
Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.), who famously cleaned up trash after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, said he is concerned that it is being “papered over.”
Kim joined CNN’s Dana Bash Sunday for “State of the Union” where he reflected on that day as it nears the four-year anniversary.
“I mean, we saw with our own eyes, those of us that were in Congress, the American people saw, people all over the world saw, and the idea that it’s being papered over and that people that attacked the Capitol rioted, that they’re being talked as liberators, as prisoners now that are being unfairly treated,” Kim said, highlighted by Mediaite.
“We are a nation of rule of law and it … does break my heart,” he continued.
Kim, who was a representative for New Jersey since 2019, was elected to the Senate in the recent election.
As president-elect Trump prepares to take office again, there are concerns about what, if any, emboldened actions he, his administration and his supporters may do.
Trump has vowed to seek retribution against his political enemies, including those who sat on the Jan. 6 Select House Committee to investigate his role in the attack.
Kim said that it makes him sad that rioters caused destruction in the Capitol and attempted to overturn the 2020 election results.
“This nation is such a great nation, and we were brought to such a sad moment on that day,” he said. “We should commit ourselves to never letting that happen again. But, instead, we see that unfortunately being a different lesson that many are taking away.”
