1 killed, more than a dozen injured in shooting at Alabama’s Tuskegee University
One person was killed and 16 others were injured during a shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama early Sunday morning.
Twelve people were wounded by gunfire and four others sustained injuries not related to shots, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a statement.
The shooting began around 1:40 a.m. and one 18-year-old man, who was not a university student, was confirmed dead. No arrests have been made and the agency is asking for the public’s assistance in the case.
The agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into the shooting and is requesting that anyone with information about the incident submit a tip.
The shooting came as Tuskegee University, a historically Black university, was celebrating its 100th Homecoming week. Monday classes have been canceled, and grief counselors will be available for students, The Associated Press reported.
Parents of the victim were notified and several of the injured were being treated at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.
One female student was shot in the stomach, and one male student was shot in the arm, police Chief Patrick Mardis said, per the AP.
The Hill has reached out to the university for comment.
