Football fans and pundits often use transfer fees as a stick with which to beat players. The higher the fee, the harder they hit. Take Darwin Núñez for example. When Liverpool paid a fee of up to £85m for the Uruguayan, many questioned the decision. Was breaking the club’s transfer record on a striker who had, in all truth, enjoyed just one prolific season with Benfica good business?
When Núñez misses a big chance – and he has missed 27 of them in the Premier League this season, more than any player other than Erling Haaland – his fee comes to the fore.
