What is the ultimate goal of Syria's rebel forces?

The Syrian military and Russian forces launched joint airstrikes Monday targeting rebel groups that seized control of the nation's largest city, Aleppo. Syria's civil war has stood at a stalemate for years, but over the weekend, rebel fighters captured cities and towns across three of the nation's northwestern provinces.
