Every Upcoming Video Game Remake And Remaster
If there's one thing that you can count on when it comes to video games, it's that a remake or a remaster is never far away. 2024 was a pretty great year for a nostalgic return to the past, as new takes on classics like Silent Hill 2, Persona 3, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door proved that there was still plenty of magic to be found in these upgraded games. 2025's release slate is sure to include a number of remakes or remasters, and we've rounded up all the known games getting a fresh lease on life below, whether or not they're confirmed to launch in 2025. You can check in for updates as the rest of the gaming calendar is fleshed out over the months to come.
Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered - February 14
Last year saw the original trilogy of Tomb Raider games get the remaster treatment, and in 2025, Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics will be shining a light on the Darkness trilogy. These games--The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and Angel of Darkness--aren't as beloved as the original trilogy, but perhaps the new graphical polish and quality-of-life updates can give them the second chance they deserve. Angel of Darkness is easily the game that can benefit the most from the remaster, as it was infamously plagued by numerous issues during development.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars - March 6, 2025
After an extended session of radio silence, Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster reemerged during the August 2024 Nintendo Partner Direct, this time with a confirmed March 2025 release date. These classic JRPGs will arrive on PC and console with some big visual upgrades, bringing the beloved games into the high-definition era. There'll also be some handy gameplay features added, like the option to speed up combat, auto-saves, and an auto-battle button for when you want to sit back and relax.
Tiny Dangerous Dungeons - March 7, 2025
The classic mini-metroidvania Tiny Dangerous Dungeons is making a comeback in 2025, as the remake features a bigger dungeon to explore, new secrets to stumble across, and even tougher boss fights to tackle.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition - March 20, 2025
Xenoblade fans have been waiting a long time for this Wii U-exclusive game to make its way to the Switch, but at long last, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will hit the platform in March. The Xenoblade spin-off will launch with not only a graphical upgrade, but also several tweaks to the gameplay, new story content, and a new epilogue chapter.
Lunar: Remastered Collection - Spring 2025
It's a great time to be a fan of old-school JRPGs, as in addition to the recent Dragon Quest remakes and the return of classic Suikoden, you can also keep an eye open for Lunar: Remastered Collection. A compilation that includes Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, these games have often been credited for helping JRPGs to find an audience outside of Japan. This edition will have numerous upgrades, like widescreen support, enhanced pixel art, HD animated cutscenes, and all-new English voice-acting.
Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-Remake - 2025
Following last year's well-received remake of Dragon Quest 3, Square Enix is going even further back in time to bring the first two Dragon Quest games into the modern era. Details on this one-two punch combo of JRPGs are slim for now, but if it follows the template set by the Dragon Quest 3 remake, you can expect the first two games in The Erdrick Trilogy to look captivating through Square Enix's signature HD-2D design.
House of the Dead 2: Remake - 2025
Scheduled to release in Spring 2025, House of the Dead 2: Remake will launch for PC, Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. The remake features gruesome new graphics, remastered music, and new modes. 2023's House of the Dead: Remake game wasn't well-received, so this reimagining of the 1998 arcade game might have its work cut out for it.
Crazy Taxi - TBA
Grab your favorite Hawaiian shirt, put on an Offspring album, and get ready to drive recklessly, as Crazy Taxi is making a comeback. Sega hasn't shared too many details on this remake, but it has confirmed that the new Crazy Taxi will be an open-world multiplayer game with MMO elements. The goal is to blend photo-realistic visuals with chaotic gameplay, keeping the spirit of the franchise intact.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos - TBA
A little renaissance is happening right now with platformer games that are headlined by adorable mascots, and Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is one such title that you can look forward to. A remaster of the 1997 3D platformer, development on this title is being handled by a reborn Argonaut Games.
Bubble Ghost Remake - TBA
A ghostly platformer, Bubble Ghost Remake has a wild premise that revolves around the ghost of a renowned inventor exploring his old castle, facing his out-of-control inventions, and doing his best to guide a bubble to freedom. Based on a '90s game, this new version of Bubble Ghost features a heck of a glow-up, as all 36 original levels have been recreated with original art. The story has been expanded on as well, as there are secret rooms, alternative endings, and hidden collectibles to uncover.
Gothic - 2025
Some games age surprisingly well with time, while other games…less so. Gothic felt dated even back in 2001, with many reviews noting the stiff combat system and clumsy controls, but Alkimia Interactive is aiming to modernize the experience with some big gameplay enhancements. If you're interested in checking out the roots of this dark fantasy series, Gothic Classic is available on PC and Nintendo Switch.
Front Mission 3 - TBA
Front Mission 1 and 2's remakes have been serviceable returns to that universe of mechanized warfare, but for US fans, Front Mission 3 is where the franchise truly began. Front Mission 3 was the first game in the series to launch outside of Japan, and like the previous two remakes, you can expect a graphically improved game, more content to explore, and tweaked gameplay.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of the Sky - 2025
Anyone looking to jump into the long-running series of Trails games can start at the very beginning of this year, as The Legend of Heroes: Trails of the Sky is getting a remake. Briefly shown off in the August 2024 Nintendo Direct, Nihon Falcom has kept relatively quiet about the game, but the brief teaser did show off a vibrant world for players to explore and a release window of 2025.
Max Payne 1 and 2 - TBA
Butter them up, because Remedy Entertainment is on a roll lately. With Alan Wake 2 earning critical acclaim across the globe, the studio is preparing to return to its past with remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. That's a whole lot of Payne. While Remedy sold the rights to the Max Payne franchise to Rockstar Games back in 2002, the two studios have teamed up to combine both games in a single package of hard-boiled narration, gritty action, and the genre-defining bullet-time gameplay--just like what took the industry by storm decades ago.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater - TBA
Long considered to be the definitive game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is getting the grand remake treatment and was originally scheduled for a 2024 release. That date came and went, with Konami providing no update on the game at the time.
What we do know is that Konami plans to bring the origin story of Big Boss into the modern age with "cutting-edge graphics and 3D audio," while also retaining the elements that made the game so iconic all those years ago--namely, tight stealth, jungle warfare, and that banger of a theme song in this Cold War thriller.
Operation Black Mesa - TBA
Half-Life's expansions--Opposing Force and Blue Shift--were great detours from the original story of Gordon Freeman, and those memorable add-ons are being reimagined in Operation: Black Mesa. Development under Tripwire Studios is still ongoing, but with Valve's blessing, this community-led remake of the expansions looks like a thrilling return to the Black Mesa incident.
Presentable Liberty Remake - TBA
Originally released in 2014, Presentable Liberty was a short game with an intriguing premise. Confined to a cell, all you could do was wait for letters from various characters to arrive across the five days you'd spend in solitude. The remake is a tribute to the late original game creator, Robert "Wertpol" Brock, and it'll have updated graphics, new interactions, more endings, and full controller support when it's eventually released.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - TBA
Ubisoft's remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has had a rocky development cycle so far, as the delays piled up and development shifted from Ubisoft's India studios to its Montreal team. The good news is that while The Sands of Time has been indefinitely delayed, there's an excellent spin-off available right now. If you're in the mood for a Prince of Persia game influenced by its past and metroidvanias, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a great game to check out.
Splinter Cell - TBA
Splinter Cell fans have been asking Ubisoft to bring the series back to life--as more than just a Ghost Recon cameo, at the very least--and those requests are finally being answered with a complete remake of the 2002 game. Development has remained in the shadows since the 2021 reveal, but Ubisoft has explained that it's aiming to modernize the series while retaining its core DNA. Splinter Cell is being built in the Snowdrop engine, the same software used to create impressive-looking games like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - TBA
Star Wars: Knights of Old Republic has been beset with issues since it was first announced in 2021, but development is still continuing on it. Aspyr Media was originally attached to this remake before Saber Interactive took over, and since then the Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 developer received a "significant equity investment" from private equity firms to help it retire its debt to Embracer Group. Now separated from Embracer, Saber Interactive revealed in September 2024 that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of several games that it's working on currently.
The Witcher - TBA
While new games set in The Witcher Universe are in development, CD Projekt Red is also working on a remake of the first game. Like several of its other in-development projects, The Witcher is being built in Unreal Engine 5. Fool's Theory is handling the remake, with the creative direction being led by several Witcher and CDPR veterans. This will also be an open-world game, a major change from the original game.
Yooka-Replayee - TBA
Continuing the trend of colorful 3D platformers, Yooka-Replayee is another blast from the not-so-distant past. A remastered and enhanced version of 2017's Yooka-Laylee, this new edition has been developed by key creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games. Fans can also expect remixed challenges, several quality-of-life updates, and new customization options.
