Japanese gaming giant Capcom owns some of gaming's most enduringly iconic franchises, including Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Dead Rising, Street Fighter, and more. But which franchises have sold the best over the years? In this post, we're running through Capcom's biggest franchises by total game sales, and providing an update for what's next in each series.
If you guessed that Resident Evil was Capcom's biggest franchise, you'd be right. With 176 million units sold as of December 31, Resident Evil is far and away Capcom's biggest, having sold some 60 million+ copies more than the No. 2 franchise.

19. Commando – 1.2 million
First release: 1985's Commando was released in arcades.
Latest release: 2009's Bionic Commando is the newest entry in the wider franchise, itself a sequel to 1988's NES game Bionic Commando.
What's next? There are no further sequels or spin-offs for Commando that have been announced.
18. 1942 – 1.4 million
First release: The first 1942 game was released in 1984 in arcades.
Latest release: The newest entry was 2010's 1942: First Strike for iOS.
What's next?There are no further sequels or spin-offs for 1942 that have been announced.
17. Final Fight – 3.2 million
First release: The Final Fight beat-em-up series debuted in 1989 for arcades.
Latest release: 2011's Final Fight for iOS is the latest release in the series.
What's next?There are no further sequels for Final Fight that have been announced.
16. Breath of Fire – 3.3 million
First release: The Breath of Fire series debuted in 1993 for the SNES.
Latest release: The latest entry in the series is 2016's Breath of Fire 6. The free-to-play game shut down in 2017.
What's next? There are no further sequels for Breath of Fire that have been announced.
15. Sengoku Basara – 4.1 million
First release: The Sengoku Basara hack-and-slash franchise debuted in 2005 for PS2.
Latest release: Sengoku Basara's latest release was 2019's Sengoku Basara Battle Party for mobile devices. It shut down in 2020.
What's next?There are no new Sengoku Basara games in development that we know about.
14. Dino Crisis – 4.5 million
First release: The original Dino Crisis, in which players fight dinosaurs, premiered in 1999 for PlayStation.
Latest release: Dino Crisis 3 was released in 2010 and is the latest entry in the series.

13. Okami – 4.6 million
First release: The Okami series debuted in 2006 for PS2.
Latest release: 2010's Okamiden for Nintendo DS is the newest entry in the franchise.
What's next? The Okami series is set to continue with a new game in the main series, which was announced at The Game Awards in 2024. Not much is known about it, however, including a proper name; it's currently referred to as Okami Sequel.
12. Ghosts 'n Goblins – 4.6 million
First release: The first Ghosts 'n Goblins game was released for Japanese arcades in 1985.
Latest release: 2021's Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection for Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC is the latest entry in the series.
What's next?There are no new Ghosts 'n Goblins games that have been announced.
11. Lost Planet – 6.8 million
First release: The third-person shooter Lost Planet came out in 2006.
Latest release: The latest release in the series was 2013's Lost Planet 3.
What's next?There are no announced games in the works, but a film was announced with David Hayter back in 2008. The movie has yet to materialize, however, which is not uncommon in Hollywood.
10. Onimusha – 8.7 million
First release: 2001's Onimusha: Warlords kicked off the franchise on PS2.
Latest release: The latest entry in the series was 2024's Onimusha VR: Shadow Team.
What's next? A remaster of Onimusha 2 launches this May, followed by Onimusha Way of the Sword in 2026.
9. Marvel vs. Capcom – 12 million
First release: The crossover fighting game series debuted in 1998 with Marvel vs. Capcom Clash of Heroes for arcades.
Latest release:The series' latest brand-new release was 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, though a collection of the classic arcade releases came out in 2024. A fan mod also released in 2024 sought to improve Infinite.
What's next?No new entries in the Marvel vs. Capcom series have been announced.
8. Ace Attorney – 13 million
First release: The series debuted with 2001's Game Boy Advance title Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
Latest release: The newest release in the series was 2024's Ace Attorney Investigations Collection.
What's next?No new games in the series have been announced.
7. Dragon's Dogma – 13 million
First release: The Dragon's Dogma series kicked off in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360.
Latest release: The sequel, Dragon's Dogma 2, came out in 2024.
What's next? Fans may be hoping for a Dragon's Dogma 3, but no such game has been announced. Dragon's Dogma 2 sold 2.5 million copies in its first week.
6. Devil May Cry – 33 million
First release: 2001's Devil May Cry was the first game in the series.
Latest release: The latest entry in the main series was 2019's Devil May Cry 5. A mobile game, Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat, came out in 2024.
What's next?No new Devil May Cry games have been announced, but a new DMC anime is coming to Netflix.
5. Dead Rising – 18 million
First release: The first Dead Rising game was released in 2006 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
Latest release: The newest entry in the series is 2016's Dead Rising 4. A remaster of the first game was released in 2024.
What's next?Reporter Jez Corden said something new might be brewing for Dead Rising, but nothing is confirmed as of yet.
4. Mega Man – 42 million
First release: The Mega Man series debuted in 1987 for the NES.
Latest release: 2018's Mega Man 11 is the latest entry in the franchise.
What's next? No new games have been announced, but Capcom management said in 2024that it was "considering" how to make new Mega Man games on an "ongoing basis."
3. Street Fighter – 56 million
First release: The Street Fighter series debuted in 1987 for arcades.
Latest release: 2023's Street Fighter 6 is the newest entry in the franchise.
What's next? Given the huge popularity of the series, it's expected Capcom would eventually release a new Street Fighter game, but the company hasn't confirmed anything yet.
2. Monster Hunter – 108 million
First release: 2004's Monster Hunter kicked off the franchise for PS2.
Latest release: The newest entry is Monster Hunter Wilds, which launches on February 28, 2025.
What's next? Monster Hunter Wilds is just coming out the door now, and it will be receiving extensive post-launch support. Mobile game Monster Hunter Now also continues to operate.

First release: The Resident Evil series debuted in 1996 for the original PlayStation.
Latest release: 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake is the newest entry in the franchise. Resident Evil Village preceded it in 2021.
