So far on M-Feb’s YouTube channel, which was launched less than a year ago, his videos have featured extremely stylish and cutting-edge surfing in Mexico, Morocco and South Africa. Like his ability on a surfboard, his music selection is distinct, creative and refreshing. In each edit, the music selection is a purposeful decision. It’s like Mikey is bringing us into a record store and playing undiscovered but welcome hits.
As Mikey told SURFER’s Chris Dodds after his Channel Islands Spearfish dropped last year, which his Spearhead Unlimited produced, the soundtrack is an integral of his work. It's curation is as important as which shots go where. “Again, that's one of my favorite parts of making surf films is exploring the options of music and even when you think you have something in your head, you find something else and apply it and that creates such a different experience,” Mikey said.
The trend continues in this edit, Mothership Connection. All centered over sandbars in Southwest France, Mikey grooves to the song made by American funk band Parliament and released in December 1975. Over drums and an electric keyboard, Mikey does his thing during a bounty of swell that hit the coast sometime between last fall and winter.

And yes, even the man who has so popularized twin fins and midlengths can still bang out turns on a thruster when the situation calls for it (he gets on a Twin Pin later in the video). Even in shifty, punch beachbreaks, Mikey retains his fine, freeflowing form. All limbs and coiled power. Heavy hooded wetsuits do nothing to diminish his skill set. I’m unsure what to label it, but that sliding, twisting layback at the 1:36 mark is clearly a work of art.
